Build a morning routine! 🌅
I am sure you, whoever you are, have watched a “My new morning routine” video somewhere on the internet. That’s no wonder because 1 they where in trend for some time and 2 they are fucking amazing. In this article, I will show you why you should build a morning routine, and how to build a simple morning routine that doesn’t throw off your entire morning. The goal of this whole article is to show you how to build a simple, productive and enjoyable morning routine. So let’s get right into it :)
Own the morning 🛌☀️
To own the morning is a step to own the day. A great morning routine can be the best start to have an amazing day. Your morning sets the tone for the rest of the day. I used to have absolutely no routine in my morning or my day. I would just get up and go to school. Maybe if it was a good day, I would brush my hair, but that was about it.
So once I discovered the whole self-improvement scene, I knew I needed one. Because my mornings were always shitty, and so was most of my following day. But with a morning routine, I had a plan. I conquered my morning, and so I conquered my day. But how do you make, a plan?
Where to start?
This was a question that haunted me. What is the first thing on my list? And I found a really nice beginner morning routine. It went like this:
Get up
take a shit
weigh yourself
make a progress pic
journal
meditate
sport
And this is exactly how I wrote it down. I created a little checklist on Google notes, and worked through that every day. And it was as simple as that. What you need to do is to write down the most simple things you do in the morning and check them in your note’s app. It doesn’t matter if it is something very productive, we just want to get started. Footnote: If you have never had a morning routine before, don’t use this one as an example, I will show you how to build your personal one.
The morning routine v.1 🌱
When it comes to building your own morning routine, you need to think about what you do in the morning anyway.
Example:
waking up
brushing your teeth
drinking coffee
scrolling through phone
eating breakfast
This could be your unknown morning routine. The first thing we want to do is eliminate morning killers.
Morning Killers 🪦
Morning killers are tasks or habits that set a certain mood for the rest of the morning, and for the rest of the day.
Examples for morning killer would be:
Checking your phone
Laying in bed and scrolling through social media
Reading the news
Listening to radio
not brushing your teeth
When we eliminate this from our morning routine, then we are one step closer to getting a solid morning routine.
Now your morning looks like this:
waking up
brushing your teeth
drinking coffee
eating breakfast
It’s a small improvement, but it pays off. Try to not touch your phone the first 30 min - 1h in the morning. Try it, it is a game changer. You will follow this style of routine for 1–2 weeks before you start with step 2.
Morning routine v.2 🌳
In this version, we can start adding things to our morning routine. Here your morning routine will take about 10–20 minutes depending on the tasks. The goal with this version is to add new small habits to your morning routine.
Some examples:
going outside and get some sun
open the windows
make your bed
make a healthy breakfast
The goals is not to move a mountain but rather to move a rock. We add small improvements before we can start with the big ones.
Your morning routine should now look something like this:
waking up
make your bed
open the windows
brushing your teeth
(get some sun while ↓)
drinking coffee
eating healthy breakfast
If you made it this far, you can be really proud of yourself because this is a huge improvement to what you did before. Now you will again follow this routine for 1–2 weeks before moving to step 3.
Morning routine v3. 🏔️
Now we are getting serious. In this step we will add some more difficult skills, but they have a great return.
Some of these skills are:
Journaling
Meditating
Cold shower
Reading
Exercise
Practicing a skill for 10 minutes
Stuff like that takes time to fully get into. If you read this, then maybe I already wrote some articles about these skills and how to learn them. They maybe the most challenging to do in the morning, but I promise you they are worth it.
Your morning routine should now look something like this:
waking up
make your bed
open the windows
cold shower
meditate
brushing your teeth
(get some sun while ↓)
drinking coffee
reading
eating healthy breakfast
Conclusion 📕
Congratulation! You build a morning routine. If you do all the steps, then I promise you, it’s just a matter of time before you have your own personal morning routine. Remember that you need to be honest to yourself when it comes to detecting your unhealthy habits. You only do this for yourself, so you only lie to yourself. With a morning routine like that no one is going to stop you, from conquering your day.
And with that, I see you in the next one :)
